Dear Joan,
Telling the Nonprofit Story
As Brooklyn’s largest grantmaking foundation, for over a decade we've been in the forefront of identifying and supporting the best local nonprofit organizations making a difference in people’s lives. In this role, we’ve helped nurture innovative approaches to addressing local issues and fostered dozens of partnerships and collaborations, while always seeking to engage other foundations and funders and bring more private resources to the borough. In our newer undertaking as a Community Foundation, we are dedicated to building the universe of donors to Brooklyn by sharing the inspiring stories of nonprofit leaders and their work and revealing the true scope of need in Brooklyn.
As we began our first 2010 grantmaking cycle as the Brooklyn Community Foundation, we received grant applications from more than 400 nonprofit organizations; these requests totaled more than $16 million dollars. This unprecedented increase in the number of applications and the size of requests reflects the increased needs in our community.
With more than half a million people already living below the poverty line and foreclosure rates among the highest in the city, we are hearing from emergency food providers who are seeing a tripling of demand for food; we are hearing from our cultural, educational and healthcare leaders about the decline in government support and their difficulty in maintaining services and protecting these assets.
We have confidence in Brooklyn’s future. But, as long the economy continues to falter, as people continue to lose their jobs, their homes and their healthcare, we must work even harder to keep our communities strong. As the story of 2010 continues to unfold, we encourage you to follow our grantmaking work, to learn about the organizations we fund and do your part to help. Our first round of 2010 grants will be announced at the end of March and we hope you will celebrate the much anticipated arrival of spring with a gift to Brooklyn. Please join us and help Do Good Right Here.
